Edge Grain Cutting Boards

The Art of Crafting an Edge Grain Masterpiece

  • At Everwood & Co., we believe that true craftsmanship lies in the precision of the process and the reverence for the material. Each of our edge grain cutting boards is a tribute to timeless technique, refined design, and the natural majesty of African mahogany.

Our process begins with the curated selection of kiln-dried African mahogany, known for its dense composition, luxurious grain patterns, and extraordinary durability. Every plank is hand-inspected to ensure optimal moisture content, structural integrity, and color consistency. We select only those cuts that embody both strength and character—an homage to the living tree from which they came.

  • The wood is then cut into long, uniform strips, typically ranging from one to two inches in width. This stage is crucial—not just for precision but for visual harmony. Each strip is then rotated so that the edge grain is proudly displayed, revealing the fine, linear patterns that make each board distinct. In this orientation, the board gains not only aesthetic elegance but also structural resilience, resisting warping while providing a smooth, durable cutting surface.

But our commitment goes further. We meticulously arrange each strip, pairing tones and grains in a composition that flows naturally across the rectangular form. Grain direction is alternated subtly to enhance dimensional stability. This is not a random assembly—it is a deliberate composition that treats wood like a mosaic, building strength and beauty in equal measure.

  • Once satisfied with the layout, our artisans apply food-safe wood glue with precision. Each strip is pressed together under even pressure, held in custom clamps to dry slowly and evenly overnight. This slow bonding process creates a singular slab—seamless to the eye, unyielding to the touch.

With the raw slab now formed, the board enters the final stage: planing, sanding, and squaring. Here, the surface is carefully flattened and refined to exacting standards. Each edge is sculpted, each corner softened, until the board achieves its iconic "Bulldog" silhouette—robust, confident, and built to endure. The resulting surface showcases the long, elegant edge grain in its full glory, each line whispering a story of patience and nature’s design.

The final step is hand-finishing with a proprietary blend of food-grade mineral oil and beeswax, which nourishes the wood and accentuates its deep, amber tones. The board is now complete: a tactile experience, a visual centerpiece, and a kitchen essential—designed to last a lifetime.
